PostSubject: hello from sunny cornwall   Tue Oct 16, 2007 1:21 pm

Hi my name is Ian (first time on the new board). I am an instructor in Muay Thai and Self Protection here in Cornwall where I teach four sessions a week.
By day I am a full time trainer in management of aggression and violence for the NHS, teaching mainly mental health staff in acute/secure settings (conflict resolution, breakaway/self protection and physical interventions etc ).
On the last forum I read some great threads ..real food for thought. keep it up- great to be back on board....

Welcome Ian,

out of interest where do you go to get qualified to teach stuff like that to NHS staff, or whoever is interested,

similar fields interest me but never really looked into it,

Cheers,

Den

hi Dennis, and thanks for the welcome

There are lots of 'train the trainer 'set ups out there, but only a few are recognised with any credibility (especially in the field of physical interventions), In fact the security management service- SMS (home office regarding v+a in the nhs) are starting to wave their big stick in a bid to get rid of the cowboy out fits and also ensure hospital trusts are having certain criteria met.
Back to training providers:
Some are ok to a point but loose their way when situations turn extremely violent (which is always difficult regardless), or seem to want to con people into thinking you can nicely and easily disengage an extremely violent person with little effort in a nice smiley type of way- which makes me cringe and really sells people short.
I myself am an instructor under General services , who are probably one of the biggest organisations and teach a range of low level right through to high risk physical interventions. Along side GS I also really rate Broadmore (whose techniques I am also farmiliar with).
If the need isn't so intense there are the likes of P.R.T (positive responce training) or skip etc
it all depend on your target group to a degree.
let me know if you want any more info etc..
All the best,
Ian
