| Just finished watching you , Randy Coture, et al on Fight Science. I found it very informative.
I noticed that during the testing the participants were exceeding the power thresholds by a comfortable to significant margin. However, I note that all the particpants were roughly 6'1", around 210 lbs, in excellent condition and had years and years of professional training / experience in martial arts.
My question is: as the average martial artisit probably isn't going to be able to generate the kind of power you can nor take a hit as well as you can, would you recommend a different tactical approach, techniques or strategy than you would normally use and, if so, what changes would you recommend?
Thanks for your time. |

| Hi John, Just want to let you know that Bas is presently in Japan to commentate on DREAM 4. He'll address your question when he's back home.
He's ridiculously busy these days. So much so that I don't know how he finds the time to do all that he does and still make time for his family. It's cool that he still takes the time to answer questions here. Anyway...

| Thanks for the update. Believe me I understand being busy I've waited 55 + years for an answer so I don't think a few days / weeks will matter much. Thank you for setting up the comm channel.
Be well.

| Hey John,
It's all about technique and once you have that you can put your body weight in the kick or punch also, but without the proper technique you can't.
I train with cable machines at 24 hour fitness, I use them for punching and kneeing. It's very hard to explain but it's all in the Big DVD's of Combat. Just "punch" with the cable machines, that's the trick. It's a HUGE piece for me to write and I really don't have the time for it, sorry about that. Maybe a friend of you has the DVD's and just borrow the power training DVD.
It's all about having your feet on the ground at the moment of impact, really using your legs, this is of course also for punching.
As for hitting the dummy hard, it's all cool to know how hard we strike, but putting such a strike on a moving person is a whole different ball game. Also, the dummy was connected to a iron table, it was like 300 pounds all together, so it has of course impact. A person moves with the strike and moves also when you connect, so the impact will never be the same.
Hope this helps!
best wishes,
Bas |
