| Hi John,
I know you really like to challenge your students in their Dan gradings. I was wondering if you could outline what a typical John Skillen grading consists of.
I ask because I have heard some impressive things about the standards you set.

| A Typical Dan grading is as follows. Padwork three 2 min rounds. Five 2 min rounds of continuous kicking boxing- semi contact!
three two min rounds of boxing- against a good boxer steady pace.
1 five min round of grappling on the ground using three good grapplers continually swopping so that the person grading is continually hard fighting for the full five mins.
point sparring for ten mins with several different opponants continually swopping so the person grading point spars for the full ten mins.
then fitness burn out drills at the close of the grading.
Obviously the gradings are designed to test the individual to a good level of fitness and skills under pressure.
Safety is paramount and the gradings adjusted to suit the individuals ability and fitness levels. we're all different.
childrens gradings are under strict supervision and take into account safety age and experience.
also sparring is not compulsary if you choose not to then the fitness and skills padwork, bagwork, etc have to be at a good standard.
I want to produce good alround practical dan grades with confidence and good mental character.
Take care John |
