| Hi John, This is something I've never asked you...
Do you or have you ever taught weapon-based skills with edged and blunt weapons?
I know it's a touchy subject for a public venue, but if so, was/is it based on formal training or "street" training or a combination of both? What did/do you emphasize on a generic level? Did/Do you emphasize the exact same strategies and tactics you do as with unarmed skills?
Looking forward to your reply. Thanks my friend...

| Question 1. Do you or have you ever taught weapon-based skills with edged and blunt weapons?
Yes I have taught weapon based skills on my tues day evening class
QUESTION 2. was/is it based on formal training or "street" training or a combination of both? Only based on real experience and the experience of those that have experienced it for real.
Queston 3. What did/do you emphasize on a generic level?
1. Treat everyone as having the potential of being armed, What I mean by that is if we're faced with a direct threat in front of us then we have to act immedetly to defend ourselfes or others. If someone has the potential to arm thereselves and we have the true beleif that they can and we're in danger, then we must take immediate pre-emptive action based on those belief's and render them incapable of doing us harm K.O. OR ESCAPE.
DON'T TAKE LIGHTLY THREATS MADE AGAINST YOU- There are many incidents where people have gone home or to their car etc and armed themselves. Then carried out stabbings with swords, knifes, batons, etc
Where you can equalise or better the weapon presented against you. Do so use anythng to hand anything the streets are littered with good objects to use in your defence look around what can you use.
Think on your feet - fighting is an instinctive act - you act accordingly to the situation that evolves in front of you, its a continuous assessment of the situation as it unfolds. A friend of mine was stabbed in the back with No warning. Another was confronted with a man with two blades after he had warned him was coming back for him. Another friened of mine took a machete to a gang then lost the machete in a struggle with the gang one of the gang members then used it against another party- me!
Glasses and bottles are a real threat- a real threat because a lot of peole don't see the danger until its too late and they being stitched up in casualty. the main reason being is that they are prevailent in our society. Like knives for example you will hear complaint after complaint about oramental knives and swords being sold they are used in attacks but the main knife of choice is the one most readily availible for use the good old kitchen knife- designed to cut meat!
Being vigilant and not givng people the opportunity to fear you as when they do they will arm up. As for muggings and robbery's, again only good awareness and hardening skills can prevent situations from happening crooks like easy targets. If you run a cash business Be more aware close to closing time or when first opening.
If your faced with an edged weapon act fast if you really can't get away (escape)- then strike first. The pre-emptive strike is the only option. Extreme agressive shouting can deter attacks.
With blunt weapons it may be better to go in rather than out. Depending on distance I've seen and struck people with a variety of coshes that have been escaping and it would have been far safer for them to have gone into the attack rather than run.
If its a duster or small sap then don't gp to ground if you do pound immediatly for a KO. With sharp implements depending on length it may be better to take the attacker to ground as the blade needs to be swung or needs distance to thrust.
With a shorter blade or stabbing implement it is better to hit first - run and avoid the ground or anytype of grappling unless it is the only choice.
Question 4. Do you emphasize the exact same strategies and tactics you do as with unarmed skills?
Of course
The main rules think on your feet, act fast, equelise where you can, or run. if you can't run use whatever you can to enable you to win the situation over.
There is of course the danger of deception be very aware, very aware. Think of how you would take someone out with a blade cosh etc how you would you do it! Learning how, why, when and where and by whom these weapons are presented will give you a massive awareness and a better chance of survival. Read the papers and check out cases reported,to give you a better idea of what is going on in your area.
Take a look in your local DIY store or market whattools are on sale are what could be used against you.
Teaming up is good two against one knife man gives you an advantage!
Be fair but firm and DON'T P*** ANYONE OFF.
Take good care John |
