Hi John,

You are skilled in various martial systems and you have been teaching self protection for some time now but what it is that prompted you to create the Pentagon system.

Hi Alan the pentagon system is an awareness program of what is likely under most circumstances to happen in violent conflict. I put it together in five phases to make it easier to teach and explain, chunks of good solid information as real today as it was yesterday. Real violence is about attude not just skills. That attitude has to be powerful - mentally strong so that when violent conflict raises its ugly face we can deal with it in a simple direct frontal assualt using forward momentum. Most importantly backed up by our willingness to have a go. And have a go under our the real rules of engagement. No mind, No thought of conseaquences, and within the confines of the Law. Sometimes we have to break the Law to win at any cost. But if we defend our selves only when all other aspect of self protection have failed then we shall be fighting with purpose and reason. The pentagon system is a collection of the very best unarmed self defence tools. To truely defend ourselves correctly we need to be pre-emptive if you wait too long you could end up dead! It is not set in stone it is what self defence should be a braod spectrum of techniques developed after proving to useful in real conflict not just a fluke but repetatively successful over many years of use.

The hardest principles to teach in real self defence is mindset, making people feel confident within theirselves gives them more self worth if you think more of your self and your loved ones and repect others then your more likely to want to defend others and yourselves.

As humans we all at some point group together we're tribal and always have been, the main reason for that tribal behavior is that people need each other we give each other strength. Through the pentagon system seminars I will do just that.

take care Alan thanks for asking if you have any more questions on the pentagon system ask away.

Within the Pentagon system do you teach any weapons work either tactical or incidental items that you may just pick up.

No Alan But in my regular class, I do teach mag light drills courtesy of your good self. I discuss weapons in the Pentagon system but as you very well know all real fighting is dependant on circumstances of situation and there are so many, so I don't teach specifics but give information. I've faced and seen varying street weapons over the years and the streets are littered with them. Before the terrorist threats of the mid to late seventies, litter bins in our streets contained an inner steel bin which could be lifted out and swung widely at an attacker. I've even seen street posts lifted out and rammed through car windscreens in running battles with football hooligans etc, etc, Anythng that can be handled with ease and is availible in the vicinity of you can be used as a defensive weapon. Any real information relevent to self defence; is the information we should as instructors give to the people we train. They can then put together a picture in their minds of possible situations and train accordingly with more venom.

My friend who shall remain anonymous for obvious reasons was called by his wife to an incident where a gang of youths were slashing car tyres, she was seen watching them so they threatened her and her children by kicking their car and making threatening gestures towards them. My friend arrived on the scene and approached the man who was on his knees still in the process of slashing car tyres with a blade. My friend knew of the dangers of tackling a knife man, but he did what I recommend knock em out before they get chance to use it on you or present it against you. He placed a well timed knee onto the knife mans jaw which stunned him. the knife man then fell to ground at this point the gang dispersed and my friend dropped into the mount and ground and pounded the man unconscious. The guy was finished very quickly and my friend was back on his feet in his car and gone.
He felt he could have got his family and left the scene but as he tried to do so felt threatened by the gang so took pre-emptive action besides if he had left what message would that send to a gang of mindless thugs they have to be shown the error of their ways.
A wake up call! They will think before they harrass or attack other inocent women and children!

When weapons are involved we must if it is right to do so escape if we can't escape we must better than equelise. Think on our feet and use anything and any measure to win the situation over.

If we are going to go to war we must first weigh up the cost. We do that during training not during an attack! I know where I draw my scratch line and I am prepared to step up to it each and every time I'm knocked down.
What are your own thought's on being unarmed and facing an attacker prepared to kill you or your loved ones whether intentionally or just because they don't care.

Take care Alan

Oh! yes Alan I forgot to let you know that THE PENTAGON SYSTEM is a system that highlights the individuals own skills and adds to them giving them their own system(way) of self defence as remember regardless of style self defence is really very, very, very individualistic. A taylored made last resort system incorporated into self protection principles and skills that realy work whether armed or unarmed, a state of mind!
