| I know this question is a bit vague, but what do you think the best combat sport would be to help you get fit and defend yourself in the street? would it be boxing as your hands are the most accessable,or maybe kickboxing so you can keep your attacker away with your longest limbs or maybe just self defence with cardio chucked in? |

| We're all different Smurfy and you will find that because of people's different MA/combat backgrounds, the answers will probably be different also, although on this forum I think there is a consensus of opinion that a handfull of very basic techniques is what you need.
Starting out, it takes a very insightful person to train in a basic 'combatives' system and realise they have got what they need. Most of us here have travelled a long road through the arts to come to the conclusion that less is more.
Having been slower than most, it took me a long time to realise that a few basics, drilled a lot, plus some anaerobic drills added, can make a very effective fighter. The biggest problem is getting some like minded people together to form a loose group.

| if its SPORT you are indicating then RUGBY has it all for me
if its REALITY you want then none of the combat sports will do.. find a decent RBSD club for that |

Funny you should say that, Dave, but as someone who played open-side, man and boy for about 25 years there are things I see people discussing about the martial arts which seem very bizarre to me after my rugby career.
What I experienced in rugby (as the equivalent to a 'linebacker' without the pads for those listening in American) was 100% commitment to the physical contact which leaves you feeling like you've been hit by a truck and 100% mental commitment to the physical contact, i.e absolute total aggression and a will to win which can manifest in 1 man taking on 3-4 by just piling full-on into each other. You never take a backward step and you never let your teammates down by wimping out of contact.
There's plenty of real violence in the adult game too (for our American listeners, imagine 2 teams of 8 in the UFC fighting as a gang with only obvious punches and kicks disallowed, everything else can be secretly used) - I'd rather be hit with bare feet than have studded boots smashed into my face and all over my body by a couple of 200 lb guys.
This does have its down-side because the injuries can be very severe, for example, I was once standing on crutches with my leg in plaster from toe to hip to see the consultant surgeon and found a team mate of mine two places up the queue who had gone into a tackle so hard it had torn the muscle off his scapula. And he was just the winger.
But I wouldn't have missed it for the world. |

| I agree with Dave T,
No sport really prepares you for the street, mentally it's a whole different animal.
You could improve your fitness which may help a little by getting into a good physical contact sport preferrably one where people dont mind bending the rules a little.

| Boxing and any form of grappling skill combined with boxing.
It would be interesting though to discuss the use of the javelin, hammer, shot put, sprinting, high jump, long jump etc - because whilst beng involved in scrapping and stopping people scrapping for well over thirty years I've used the mechanics of most sports at some point
I think that any sport offers something- fitness-endurance-strength-timing- coordination-strong character, etc.
BUT the most important aspect of reality training that some sports do offer is the sychological ability to defend yourself when you know that someone is going to attackl you and if your not successful in your defence you could die!
And they are combat sports without the rules.
Being specific to your needs is the best way forward for example taking a ju jitsu, judo, karate, kung fu class because its something you've always wanted to do (for the art and culture of it) wil give you some serious self defence skills. But if its to defend yourself then it would be more beneficial to get very serious reality borne self defence training very specific to your requirements.
take care John |

| Now that was a reply I enjoyed.
But using most sprts during your 30 years - you mentioned long jump? Now I've been for the high jump on a couple of occasions
"whilst beng involved in scrapping and stopping people scrapping..." Nicely put John. I've heard a lot of highfoluting and conveluted ways of explaining where a persons experience was arrived, but your concise words are spot on. After 30 years in the cops, I never thought of explaining it that way.
Err, the mechanics of using a javelin or shot put would have been great on some occasions - if I'd had a javelin or putt. Imagine the impact of those things in a fight
Joking aside, the body dynamics which are created via training with such athletic disciplines, in my view, have value in the SP world. In your head, apply the start of moving an eight pound shot to your chin jab and you have immediately visualised a powerful blow. Now grab a small medicine ball (much like the ones John's brother Pete, gave me)and reherse the blow against a wall. Repeat until you are getting tired and you will see real power genaration starting to apply - when your arms get tired you start to use your body to move things.
Grerat thread...
