Hi John,
I prefer my dominant hand to be in the rear when executing a preemptive palm hook (my bread-and-butter shot), but can equally/capably throw the shot from any position I might find myself in, be it the lead or neutral/square positions. Being able to throw your bread-and-butter shot from any position is an invaluable skill to have because you may, on occasion, not find or not be able to maneuver yourself into a favored position. So as not to telegraph my intentions, I have thrown my palm hook from all the aforementioned positions (rear, lead, and neutral) on various occasions as the situation dictated and had no problems affecting knockouts in any of the positions.

My recommendation is to train your dominant hand bread-and-butter shot(s) from the rear side first, then in neutral positions, and finally, in a lead position. In fact, I suggest doing this with all your core hand strikes too. I strongly feel that it shouldn't matter where/how your feet are positioned, you should be able to throw power shots from any position/stance you find yourself in, whether premeditated or not.

Take Care,
Lito
