If an 'interested' publisher wants you to pay them to publish you, laugh derisively and walk away. That can be hard when you're desperate to break in, but you won't be any better off paying a scammer.

There are some dreadful examples of this sort of exploitation out there.

Google 'whispers and warnings' or 'writer beware' for a website with some information on this.

Hi Jeff, are you getting anywhere yet?

Ive been looking for an agent for a novel I have written too, and am through to about the E`s in the writers and Artists yearbook. So far ive just had standard refusal letters. It is bad when you start seeing the goal as getting your first personalised refusal letter, or maybe a bit of feedback along with the NO! Ha ha.

Anyway keep going mate, and when you get a positive response tell them you know someone with a masterpiece to sell as well....lol

Yes, I like to think I am getting somewhere, but have taken a vow to remain tight lipped until things are signed, sealed, and delivered.

I am very superstitious and don't want to jinx myself.

Do you write fiction or non-fiction?

Oh Jeff that sounds promising then! Understand about not wanting to jinx yourself.

The book im touting is fiction, as is the one im writing. I have been wondering whether it would be a good tactical move to write some non fiction as well. What do you think?

Well it depends on your strengths I suppose.

One thing to consider is that fiction MUST be completed before attemtping to find a publisher where as non-fiction can have a proposal submitted before the project is done.

Over at the Bohemian Cafe next week I have arranged a Q&A session with author Danny King who has an armful of books to his name, Danny has agreed to come online and answer questions about writing and getting published and life in general, might be worth checking out as he has also been editor of a couple of magazines and a jounalist, you may get some good information.
