Second Novel is done!!!

Been a busy boy these past few months and I'm happy to say that my second novel, a horror thriller tentatively titled "Dying to Teach" is finally finished. It is 2:00 a.m. and I am sitting back with a large c**k and hoping I have more initial success with this one than I did my last.

Wow, impressive stuff Jeff - what, it must only be three or four months since you completed the first one? That is pretty fast work!

Best of luck with them both Jeff, I hope you manage to snag an Agent or Publisher (or both!) in 2008.

Geez, that's tough. Kind of like asking your favorite song or film Smile

I'm a big fan of horror and suspense thrillers. I really liked Clive Barker's early works with his Books of Blood and In the Flesh and The Inhuman Condition.

Some of Stephen King's stuff is decent.

For suspense thrillers I like the Prey novels by John Sandford and Harlen Coben has put out a few good ones.

Red Dragon by Thomas Harris is fantastic but I thought Silence of the Lambs and his sequels thereafter were overrated.

I'm sure I'll add more later but those popped in off the top of my head.

I have to agree about Harlen Coben - it was only a year or so ago that i came across thsi guy, but he writes some very good books.

The twists and turns are amazing, but the thing that does it mroe for me is how he creates characters that I find myself caring about more that the actual plot. A mark of an incredible writer, in my opinion.

Coben is no doubt a master of the twist, but my beef is that I feel he has type-cast himself into it. Some of his books have twists for the sake of having twists and you end up going, "Huh? That was dumb."

I think If you've read two or three of his books then you've read them all.

A fair point - there have been one or two points (both with Coben and one or two other writers) where I have gotten lost in the midst of all the twists and turns, and not actually known what was going on!

Those that had well developed and interesting characters I would read through to the end anyway, and others not. I do know what you mean about it sometimes being for the sake of it. And I guess then you have to surpass yourself with each subsequent book, which can only lead to daft ideas in the end

Still a very good writer, but I reckon best to limit yourself to one of his per year - that way you still really enjoy them

Good point.

Have you read any of John Sandford's stuff? He is a great thriller writer, especially his Prey series. His most recent "Broken Prey" was fantastic.

Another author, whose writing itself is so-so, but he tells a darn good story with good characters, is Phillip Margolin. Check out 'Wild Justice' or 'Gone but not Forgotten'
