June 7th in Loughborough - Full details on www.enshin.co.uk

“Just before I had the opportunity to open my own fitness centre and dojo, I decided to take on another form of martial art to keep me from boredom and to improve my all-round ability. I looked into the - at the time little known - form of karate known as ENSHIN karate (karate in the inner circle) which utilises the strong sabaki method. Enshin karate was being taught by Gary Chamberlain, a former Kyokushin karate-ka. I decided to sit in and watch a session. What I witnessed was a well delivered, well balanced and disciplined class. What I'd expected good Karate to be. There was one difference I found in comparison to other styles I'd witnessed and that was that Enshin Karate used very strong pulling, sweeping, take down and gripping techniques as well as powerful kicks which added to its practicality. After witnessing the style I decided to join Gary's classes and take a study in Enshin Karate.

Shortly after joining, Gary invited me onto one of Enshin's regular seminars taught by Kancho Joko Ninomiya, a modern Karate legend. I hadn't been to a traditional Karate seminar before. Of course I have been to many RBSD seminars taught by Karate experts. The seminar was well attended and extremely well delivered. Kancho's power was obvious from the start, evident by his sheer physical presence. From my own experience I could tell he was a real combat exponent that trusted his own style and ability. A man that has worked hard to put together a serious form of Karate. We trained in Gi's as is the Karate tradition, which was fine by me as the Gi to me represents everyday modern clothing - trousers and a top!

I would recommend Kancho's Enshin seminars or Gary Chamberlain’s classes to anyone who is serious about their training. Whether it’s for martial arts or self protection you will gain massive awareness of a fresh vibrant style of real combat orientated Karate suitable for anyone regardless of age or gender”

Greetings all,

I asked John to write his thoughts about Enshin karate and Kancho Joko Ninomiya in particular. (See previous post)

Why? We find ourselves not quite in the traditional karate camp (What - NEW kata?) and not quite in the RBSD camp (What - I need a Gi?) So despite a lot of interest, few seem willing to take a risk and try something a little different!

John Skillen, as most using this board will know, is an awesome fighter who can definately do the business but at the same time remains realistic and down to earth. I hope his comments strike a chord - not just because I want to 'sell' the course, but if John respects Kancho Ninomiya you can be sure he's worth making the effort to train with!
