PostSubject: Hydration   Mon Jul 21, 2008 10:42 pm

Yesterday was one of the warmest days that we have enjoyed this summer and last night in training we drilled hand strikes and low kicks, drill after drill after drill, very intense sweaty and tiring.

I cannot emphasis enough how important it is too take plenty of water on board during session like this, as the instructor I take the responsibility and tell everyone in between drills to get some water down them but often when people are training alone or with a friend they get wrapped up in what they are doing and do not take enough water, in the long run this will effect your health and your performance, take plenty of water on guys.

Has anyone suffered or witnessed the effects of people in training not taking enough water.

Alan

Great point. I live in a very hot and humid area and do my best to remain hydrated. I have seen people experience the beginnings of problems related to this, but thankfully nothing too serious has happened in my presence. I do have a friend that had to be hospitalized and hooked up to an IV to be rehydrated.

I haven't seen it happen in training but A lad that I was working with a couple of years ago passed out through dehydration and we had to get an ambulance for him, he drifted in out of consciousness each time he opened his eyes he was extremely disoriented, could not remember simple facts about himself and sometimes felt naseaus, I went with him to the hospital where they put him on a drip and he quickly recovered.

The thing that got me was just how quickly he went from seemingly fine to be completely out of it, I now tell students all through the session to get some water down them as they often dont feel the need but dont realise how quickly it can effect them.

I've made this mistake a few times - the room we training in until recently was one without windows, and would be like an oven through the summer months. Not taking a few seconds to drink just out of not wanting to stop, wanting to get everything possible out of the session, has left me feeling very ill on a couple of occasions. The worst case saw me pulling over several times on the drive home to vomit in the gutter, and probably lucky not to have had a serious accident on route.

Always have to learn these things the hard way, getting older at a much faster rate than I'm getting wiser!

I always hydrate through the day at work, chugging away at a large bottle of water. I've sometimes been known to get through 3 litres. I never drink during training for this reason and I do get very hot and sweat alot. Also I never suffer ill effects for this reason.

I also judge my hydration level by the colour of mu urine, the clearer the better. The vast majority of the time mine is like water! I'm always very careful with hydration

Hi Paul,

As you are now teaching it is good to remember that you are liable for the students well being as well as your own and it is advisable to make sure that they take water during a session as you have no way of knowing how much water that they have taken on before training and they probably have not done as much training as yourself and could be badly effected by dehydration.

Just something to bear in mind.

I certainly don't stop people taking water in class, though because I insist on a time and a place. I don't like repeating myself because someone decides to ignore the exercise demo turn their back and take a long chug or water.
